Limiting the amount of TV that your child should watch

Everything that you do in life you should have a balance; this means that you should do things in moderation. This is because doing too much of something is never a good thing and this of course would include watching television. Hence, if your child is watching too much television then as a parent it is your responsibility to limit the amount of time that your child can watch the television. Children are like sponges and they can easily absorb all sorts of information that they receive and most of what they learn will come from the television. Whether the things they learn are good or bad will depend heavily on the television program that they are watching. The following are some tips and guides that will help you in controlling the TV habits of your child.

The first thing that you can consider doing is to make a schedule of when the child is able to watch television. The other thing that you may want to do is to allocate the appropriate number of hours they can watch the television. If it is possible then you may also want to sit with your child when they are watching the TV. Take this opportunity to bond with your child and also to guide them about the things that they are being exposed to. However if you are busy with the household chores or some other work, make sure that you check on them occasionally. Long hours of television are no good for anyone and this goes the same for your child.

There is a reason for the classifications that they label on the programs that they show on TV. Before you let your child watch that particular program, check it to make sure that it is age appropriate for your child. So try to steer your child away from programs that are related to sex and portrays an excessive amount of violence. Even some cartoon programs show a lot of violence, so it is up to the parents to judge whether they should allow their children to watch such programs. Remember when you let your child watch such shows or let them have the opportunity to gain access to such shows, it will leave a negative impact on them.

This article is not taking an opportunity to bash the television as there are some very good programs out there that can be very beneficial to your child. In fact, as a parent you should encourage them to watch such shows and they do not have to be boring educational program as there are some very interesting as well as entertaining programs out there that your child will be sure to enjoy.

Try not to let the television become a place where you would send your child if you are too busy to attend to them. Instead have them do something that will be more beneficial such as reading a book, drawing and other similar activities. And you should also never let your child watch television during dinner time or before they go to sleep. Instill these habits in them while they are young as trying to do this as they grow older may become increasingly difficult. Remember that your role as a parent is not limited to just raising your child, in fact as a parent you take on many roles to ensure that your child grows up to be the best that they can be.
